Aloha Bobcat Ohana,
To quote Kenny Loggins, “The heat is on!” and school is just around the corner. I hope you are as excited for Meet Your Teacher on Thursday evening (4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.) as we are to see you. Our PTA has some wonderful events planned for our Palm Lake family this year, so please be sure to stop by and visit them in the cafeteria. You can sign up for PTA, double-check your bus route, sign up for before and after-school care with Champions or one of our other local providers, visit with some of our Partners in Education, and sign up for clubs from area vendors that meet on our campus.
Please read this entire document, as some of our policies and procedures have changed from previous years to comply with new safety regulations and mandates to help keep our students and teachers safe while on campus

We strongly encourage volunteers at our school. ADDitions are family members and community members who volunteer to help teachers and students. School board policy requires that all volunteers and visitors present a valid photo identification and check in through the school office. In order to volunteer in any capacity at Palm Lake, including chaperoning field trips, adults must be registered and approved through ADDitions.
Your photo identification will be entered into the RAPTOR system, and you will be issued a visitor badge. The visitor badge is to be worn the entire time while on campus. If you need to go to a different location on campus, you will need to return to the main office and update your visitor badge with the second location.
To register as an ADDition volunteer, please visit: Volunteer.ocps.net. Volunteers must renew their volunteer application each school year.

- Signing up to help does not mean spending an exorbitant amount of time, just that you are willing to give whatever time you can or want. Any time whatsoever is crucial, and goes a long way. Whether you help organize an event or simply help out on the day, you can utilize your special skills and hobbies and help Palm Lake become a better place!
- Membership forms are available in the cafeteria during Meet the Teacher, in the front office during the school year, or just email us at PalmLakePTA@gmail.com to join.
- PTA meetings typically occur at least once a month, sometimes in person, and sometimes virtually. By attending, you will be in the know on what is happening at the school, and have input on decisions. Please follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/PalmLakePTA to stay up to date.
- Does your employer match charitable gifts? Many companies not only encourage their employees to give to and volunteer time to nonprofits in their communities, but they are also willing to match those efforts with employee matching gifts. Guidelines and amounts vary with each company. Check with your employer for more information.
- If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, including helping in the classroom, you must complete the Orange County Additions Volunteer information using the link below.

Palm Lake utilizes many forms of communication throughout the school year. Some of these main methods are listed below.
ParentSquare
Our main form of communication is Parent Square. ParentSquare is a school-wide communication tool. Palm Lake relies on it to communicate with one another, instantly sharing messages, updates, events, and photos from class. You can use it on any device- cell phone or computer. It is a simple and free mobile app for iOS and Android. Translation services are available on ParentSquare; you can choose your desired language, and the messages will be translated for you. Our school goal is for every family to be connected.

School gates will open to students at 8:15 a.m. each morning. Please do not drop your children off prior to this time, as there is no adult supervision provided by the school until 8:15 a.m. Before-school care is offered by the Champions program from 7 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. at a nominal cost.
School gates will close this year at 8:40 a.m. Students will still be able to enter through the front office until 8:45 a.m. without being marked tardy; however, they will need a parent to sign them in to school. Students should be in their classroom and ready to learn at 8:45.

Drop-off for students in grades K, 4, and 5 will be under the awning in front of Building 6. Students in grades 1, 2, and 3 will unload in front of Building 5. Parents, you should remain in your cars, and staff will help your child get out of the vehicle. We will not have our student safety patrols helping the first week of school, so please be patient as the staff assists you and your child. That being said, please keep in mind that you may want to stagger the delivery of items from the supply list, as our students will need to carry them from the car to the classroom with minimal assistance. Once students are inside the building, they will be directed by staff to their classroom hallway waiting area. Also, if you have siblings who unload at different places, the older child(ren) should walk from the youngest child’s unloading area so that you have just one place that you need to be.
Pick-up of students in grades K, 4, and 5 will be under the awning in front of Building 6. Students in grades 1, 2, and 3 will be picked up in front of Building 5. Car Rider tags will be distributed by classroom teachers to families. These tags should be displayed on the windshield on subsequent days. Please be sure that the person picking up your child on the first day of school knows the name of your child’s teacher to facilitate the dismissal process. Also, if you have siblings who load at different places, the older child(ren) should walk to the youngest child’s loading area so that you have just one place that you need to be. Please be sure to let all affected teachers know that this will be happening. At 3:15 (2:15 on Wednesdays), students who have not been picked up will be taken to the front office to call home. Parents will need to then park and come into the office to sign their child out of school.

OCPS has a policy, when any parent or visitor is on campus, he/she must be escorted by school personnel; therefore, on the first day of school, when your kindergartener arrives to school, you may bring him/her to the double doors at the front of building 6 where Mr. Weis, our principal, will be greeting you. Kindergarten teachers will meet your child and then bring him/her to the classroom. Beginning on Friday, we ask that parents please remain in their cars. Kindergartners will enter the building on their own, and school personnel will be available to assist them in getting to their classrooms.
|
|
Students are the only ones who will be permitted to use their bicycles on campus. Once they have secured their bicycle, students may either go to breakfast or to their classroom hallway waiting area until class starts.
|
|
If you walk your child to school, please say goodbye before the crosswalk at the bus loop if arriving from the Dr. Phillips Blvd. side of campus, and at the entrance gate if arriving from the Torey Pines side of campus. For dismissal, please follow this same arrival procedure and wait for your children at the crosswalk area near the bus loop or from the entrance gate if coming from the Torey Pines side of campus. This is an important safety procedure, as it keeps our school sidewalk and dismissal area less crowded and allows school personnel to monitor students easily and how they are leaving campus. Please do not approach the dismissal area for car riders. Your child will be sent to the location where you are waiting.
|
|
When students arrive at school, they will head either to the cafeteria for breakfast or to their classroom waiting area. School personnel will be at the bus loop to help students find their classrooms if needed. If older students have a Kindergarten sibling they need to drop off at class, they may do so before heading to their classroom.
|
|
Please know that our top priority is the safety of our students. Our dismissal policies and procedures are designed to keep all students safe and to ensure that they make it home each day in the manner in which their parents have intended.
Parents should communicate with the front office regarding the dismissal plan for their child. We will not permit a change in this plan unless we hear directly from the parents.
All early departures must be done before 2:30 pm (M, T, R, F) and 1:30 pm (Wed). Once we begin preparing for dismissal, students will not be called for early departure.
If lightning is spotted within 6 miles of the school, we will implement our bad weather dismissal plan. Students will not be dismissed (walkers, car riders, or bus riders) until the weather has passed, OR if a parent comes to the office to check them out. Parents will need a photo ID or a car tag to pick up their child. Please note that a bad weather dismissal can delay the dismissal process.
|
|
In the event of a delayed dismissal (typically due to lightning in the area), students will be housed in their respective classroom buildings to wait out the storm. Please remain in your vehicles. If it is safe, PLE staff will direct you one at a time to the front of your building, where you may exit your vehicle and sign your child out. We will not be able to bring your child to the car, nor release them to your car. You must sign them out and escort them to your vehicle personally. If there are no staff outside to assist you, please remain safely in your vehicle until the storm passes. We appreciate your patience during this process, and please be sure that we want to get them home as safely and quickly as you do.

Regular attendance is required by law, and written excuses are required within 48 hours of the child’s return to school.
A written excuse should include the following: Student name, date(s) of the absence, reason for absence(s), and a parent/guardian signature. Students may be excused when the absence is due to personal illness, serious illness/death in the student’s immediate family, doctor/ legal appointments, or to observe religious holidays. A doctor’s note is required when a child has missed three or more consecutive days. All other absences are unexcused unless the activity is sponsored by the school or the absence is pre-approved by the principal. The student is responsible for completing all assignments missed during an absence. Regular attendance at school is necessary if children are to be successful.
Chronic absenteeism (a total of 10 or more absences a year) can impact student achievement.
Any student not in class by 8:45 a.m. will be marked tardy. Tardy students must be signed in at the main office in order to be issued a tardy pass.
